What does Bitcoin Hype Index measure?
BHI is an attention composite. It describes the intensity of selected Bitcoin-related information activity, not whether people are bullish or bearish. A spike can accompany excitement, uncertainty or negative news. It does not directly measure purchases, capital flows, ownership or willingness to pay.
The index is specific to BitcoinReversal’s stored source series. A score of 100 is a normalized reference value, not 100% of investors and not a probability of a market top.
Calculation used by the public chart
Weekly BHI = mean of available daily BHI readings in the UTC week
Deviation (%) = 100 × (selected daily or weekly BHI ÷ 35 − 1)
W, G and Y are the normalized Wikipedia, Google web-search and YouTube-search components returned by the source API. The public view explicitly requests weights 1:1:1. Weeks begin Monday UTC. Bitcoin’s weekly price is the last available daily close; the current week can also include the latest intraday quote. BHI is the weekly mean.
The threshold is 35. Values above 35 are red, marking the BHI sell-warning zone for elevated attention and potential topping risk. Values below 35 are gold; they do not automatically constitute a buy signal. Exactly 35 is the boundary. The same colours apply to the index line and the lower deviation chart. A BHI reading of 70 produces +100% deviation; 17.5 produces −50%. This warning level does not guarantee a market top.
Threshold updated from 25 to 35 on September 11, 2026. The new threshold is also applied to the historical chart; those historical classifications are retrospective.
The third component is YouTube search interest, not a count of all Bitcoin video views. A separate stored video-count field does not enter this selected three-component composite.
Data coverage and reconstruction limits
Check the verified source status for each source observation date and last collection check. A valid zero is recorded separately from missing or failed collection; the numeric value alone does not establish source health.
Read the BHI observation date together with the source verification dates. A recent numeric value alone does not establish successful collection. If a source is delayed or failed, do not interpret a missing current reading as low attention. Bitcoin price may continue beyond the available attention history.
Historical query geography, collection windows and platform normalization settings are not fully recorded in the available metadata. The stored composite can be inspected, but it cannot currently be independently rebuilt from the original platform queries. Verification of recent observations does not retrospectively validate the entire history or recover undocumented collection settings.

How to interpret attention without overstating it
- Attention is not sentiment. High activity can reflect positive or negative events.
- Normalized scores are relative. Different windows, regions or platform settings can change the scale.
- Source coverage matters. A partial composite is not comparable to one with all three components working.
- Correlation is not a timing rule. The page does not establish that a given reading predicts a reversal or a future return.
Compare attention with an independently defined price condition such as Pi Cycle Top or a longer-run reference such as Power Law. Keep each model’s limitations visible.
Primary-source context
Google’s explanation of Trends data describes sampled search activity, normalization relative to a query’s time and location, and why low-volume results can appear as zero. These properties make collection settings essential to interpreting a composite. Google’s documentation describes its source data; it does not validate BitcoinReversal’s index.
Bitcoin Hype Index questions
What does the 35 threshold mean?
A BHI reading above 35 enters the red sell-warning zone. Below 35 the chart is gold. This is an attention-based topping-risk warning, not a guaranteed reversal or an automatic buy instruction below 35. The daily and weekly views apply the same threshold to different observation intervals.
Is the current BHI reading available?
Use the dated daily reading and the verified source status. They show the latest available observation and whether each source has verified coverage through the latest completed UTC day. Source updates can arrive at different times; the observation date identifies the latest verified reading.
Is BHI the same as Fear and Greed?
No. BHI combines selected attention components. Other sentiment indices use different inputs, weights and definitions.
Does low attention mean Bitcoin is cheap?
No. Low attention does not establish fair value, future demand or an appropriate purchase decision.
Does a zero component always mean missing data?
No. Zero can also be a normalized or low-volume result. This is why the page reports source activity and withholds conclusions when coverage cannot be verified.
Verified source status
Wikipedia, Google and YouTube publish updates at different times. The index advances when all three components for a later completed UTC day are verified.
Latest verified daily BHI: 32.67 / 100. Observation: . This measures attention, not a probability or a price forecast.

An expected publication delay is different from a failed update. Missing observations are not treated as measured zero. Wikipedia uses the English Bitcoin article, all access and all agents, including automated traffic. Earlier history retains its documented collection and reconstruction limits.
